Ministry of Public Health and Population

Press Release — 10 October 2026

The Siege of Taiz Threatens a Shutdown of Health Services and a Humanitarian Catastrophe

The Ministry of Public Health and Population warns of an imminent health and humanitarian catastrophe in Taiz city as the Houthi militia continues its siege and obstructs essential supplies. Medicines, intravenous fluids, medical supplies and fuel at the city’s health facilities are nearing depletion.

If this situation continues, emergency care, surgery, intensive care, dialysis and neonatal services could be forced to stop, placing patients, injured people, pregnant women and newborns at immediate risk. Fuel shortages also threaten electricity generators, ambulances and cold chains for medicines and vaccines, potentially causing severe complications and preventable deaths.

The Ministry holds the Houthi militia responsible for the siege, the obstruction of supplies and their health and humanitarian consequences. It demands the immediate lifting of the siege and reopening of supply routes, with safe passage guaranteed for patients, ambulances, health personnel and humanitarian assistance.

The Ministry calls on the United Nations, humanitarian organisations and health partners to act urgently to deliver medicines, intravenous fluids, medical supplies, oxygen and fuel to health facilities in Taiz city, in coordination with the Ministry and the governorate health office. Priority must be given to life-saving services and maintaining facility operations.

The Ministry stresses that protecting patients, health facilities and health workers, and ensuring access to medical supplies, are humanitarian obligations that cannot be delayed. Every delay increases the risk of service interruption and loss of life.
